International Science & Policy Symposium (ISPS 2026) - Collaborate to Innovate: Advancing Global Research Amid Geopolitical Challenges

24.06.2026 - 25.06.2026

The International Science & Policy Symposium (ISPS) 2026, organized by German U15, in cooperation with the Russell Group and the Volkswagen Foundation, will once again bring together global leaders from universities, research organizations, politics, and industry to explore how international collaboration can advance research and innovation in a time of profound transition.

Shaping Research Collaboration in a Turbulent World

Climate change, geopolitical tensions, democratic backsliding, and rapid technological transformation have created a new era of uncertainty. Research and innovation have never been more essential – or more politically sensitive. At the same time, universities themselves face new pressures, from funding challenges to questions about their global role and societal responsibility.

In 2026 the ISPS explores how research-intensive universities can strengthen societies by deepening international collaboration and transforming knowledge into impact. It positions global cooperation not as a luxury, but as a strategic necessity for security, prosperity, and resilience.

Core Themes

The symposium addresses four interconnected themes, each with a shared global perspective:

  • From research to impact: Making Knowledge Matter
How can global partnerships accelerate the translation of research into innovation? What role can European research and mobility funding play in a changing global science system? Which collaborative infrastructures and frameworks, such as the UK’s spinout ecosystem and German industry’s commitment to research, best support knowledge transfer and innovation?
  • Free research for open societies?
As disinformation and authoritarian pressure grow, how can research-intensive universities uphold democratic values? How can international academic cooperation support open societies? And how should Europe respond to safeguard academic freedom?
  • Research building a safer world: security, resilience and universities –How does an ever-growing focus on security and defence affect universities? How will it impact research and international academic cooperation?
  • Dear ChatGPT, when should I use you? AI and ethics in research
How is machine learning changing research? What ethical questions does this raise? How can AI become more reliable, explainable, and fair?

A keynote session on “Universities in Turbulent Times” will address how research-intensive institutions can adapt to shifting geopolitical, financial, and demographic realities while upholding academic excellence and societal responsibility.

Format

Each session combines a short opening dialogue, a high-level international panel, and interactive audience engagement. Ample time for informal networking – including a Walk & Talk in the Herrenhausen Gardens – provides opportunities for bilateral meetings and collaboration.

ISPS: A Platform for Global Exchange

The ISPS 2026 offers a unique space for reflection, exchange, and action – highlighting how universities, through joint research and innovation, can contribute to a more sustainable, democratic, and resilient global future.
