How is artificial intelligence (AI) transforming research in the humanities? What new opportunities are emerging for disciplines such as literary studies or history? And what ethical questions must be considered along the way? These complex questions were the focus of this year’s HUJI-FUB Digital Humanities Winter School, which took place from February 24 to 26, 2025, at Freie Universität Berlin.

Organized by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Freie Universität Berlin, and supported by the German-Israeli Foundation (GIF), German U15, and the FUB Office of International Affairs, the Winter School brought together 45 early-career researchers from 18 institutions across Germany and Israel. Jan Wöpking, Managing Director of German U15, took part in the official opening ceremony and delivered a welcome address.

Through expert lectures, workshops, and a mini-hackathon, participants explored how emerging technologies are transforming the humanities - and what responsible use of these tools might look like. Attendees were particularly impressed by the successful integration of theory and practice, as well as the many opportunities for international networking. The Winter School clearly demonstrated the importance of sustainable institutional support in fostering innovative, cross-border academic collaboration.

More than just a space for learning and exchange, the Winter School sent a strong signal about the relevance of interdisciplinary and international cooperation in times of digital transformation.
