Exploring the dynamics in science and innovation in the Greater Bay Area’s R&I ecosystem

From 2 to 6 February 2026, German U15 and TU9 conducted a joint delegation visit to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, two key nodes of the Greater Bay Area– one of Asia’s most dynamic science and innovation regions. Over the course of a week, the delegation visited universities, research institutes, and innovation hubs to gain on-site insights and to learn how this dynamic research and innovation ecosystem is evolving. The delegation gained a nuanced perspective to strengthen existing ties and explore new forms and avenues for collaboration.

Visits to Leading Universities and Innovation Hubs in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the delegation highlighted the diversity and strength of Germany’s university landscape, including initiatives such as the Excellence Strategy and the High Tech Agenda. Meetings with senior representatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the University Grants Committee, and Invest Hong Kong provided valuable insights into the scientific, and economic context of the region.

Campus and lab visits to leading universities – including the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong – as well as exchanges at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, offered opportunities to discuss research priorities, transfer initiatives, and joint projects. Further discussions with representatives of Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Metropolitan University deepened the dialogue on academic cooperation.

A joint roadshow with the Croucher Foundation enabled direct engagement with highly qualified PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers interested in pursuing academic careers in Germany. The strong interest from early-career researchers underlined the potential for intensified talent exchange. The delegation also met with students and parents at the U15 Swiss International School to discuss study and research opportunities in Germany.

Insights into Shenzhen’s Emerging Research Ecosystem

In Shenzhen, the delegation gained first-hand insights into the region’s rapidly evolving research and innovation hub. Visits to the Southern University of Science and Technology and the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory provided an overview of ambitious institutional strategies, research agendas, and talent development models. Exchanges with representatives from the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation and additional universities in the area further enriched the dialogue.

The visit was supported by the German Consulate General in Hong Kong and Guangzhou as well as by the Croucher Foundation. We would like to thank all partners, hosts and organisers for their generous support, the warm welcome, and the insightful discussions during the delegation visit.
